Newbies March 2014

16th April 2014

Err … what happened? Seriously, what the hell happened?!

So, I was really down after I failed to reach my goal of reducing my TBR pile by two books in February because I sacrificed my reading time in order to sew my sister a Little Red cape for carnival. Yeah, I’m an awesome big sister, I know. Therefore, my book-buying abstinence was all for nothing. Then I went to Munich to visit Ric and went to a big book flea market. Then I realised that I hadn’t rewarded myself for finishing my bachelor thesis. Then I ordered books. And more books. Aaaaand just a couple of more books. It’s always the same. At least, I got most of them second hand thus cheap. Enjoy!

A couple of random purchases:

  1. Alles über Pferdeställe by Tiina Vainikainen
    [LT: Everything About Stables]
  2. Basteln für dich und dein Pferd by Andrea Berlin
[LT: Crafting for You and Your Horse]
  3. Sicherheit für dich und dein Pferd (Pferdewissen, #1) by Emma Jeppsson
[LT: Safety for You and Your Horse]
  4. Das kleine Pferdelexikon by PennyGirl (Ed.)
    [LT: The Little Horse Lexicon]

My most recent attempt to complete my PonyClub/Pony/PennyGirl collection. I’m doing quite well at the moment and have already read three of the four.

  5. Insurgent (Divergent, #2) by Veronica Roth
[dt. Tödliche Wahrheit (Die Bestimmung, #3)]
  6. Allegiant (Divergent, #3) by Veronica Roth
[dt. Letzte Entscheidung (Die Bestimmung, #3)]

Ric wanted to get rid of her copies and I was happy to take them off her hands. They don’t exactly match my edition of Divergent but I can live with that. I’m not quite sure whether I’m looking forward to reading them because I heard not so great stuff about them but since I want to finish the trilogy, I’ll do it anyway.

First part of the book flea market haul:

  1. Das Lächeln der Fortuna (Walsingham, #1) by Rebecca Gablé
[LT: The Smile of Fortuna (Walsingham, #1)]

It’s not in great shape but it was cheap and I’ve heard so much about it from Yvo that I just wanted to check it out.

  2. Die Dirne und der Bischof (Elisabeth, #1) by Ulrike Schweikert
[LT: The Harlot and the Bishop (Elisabeth, #1)]

I love her Die Erben der Nacht [Heirs of the Night] series to pieces and wanted to pick up some of her other novels for a very, very long time. So when I stubled upon this book, which seems to be brand new, I couldn’t resist.

  3. Feuer und Stein (Highland-Saga, #1) by Diana Gabaldon
    [OT: Outlander (Outlander, #1)]

I think I found out about this series when the first pictures of the show popped up on the Internet. Still, I couldn’t get myself to buy the first book because the novels are massive and the series quite long. However, I couldn’t walk away from this bargain. It has an annoying bend mark but it cost only €2.

  4. My Name Is Memory by Ann Brashares
[dt. So nah und doch so fern]

It’s in really bad condition but since I wanted to pick it up for ages just didn’t want to pay the full price since I’m not quite sure whether I’ll like it, I had to get it.

  5. Wintermärchen by Mark Helprin
    [OT: Winter’s Tale]

I’ve seen the movie and although it was very cheesy, I did enjoy it. The Andalusian stallion is gorgeous! However, I’ve heard that the novel is much much better and more detailed. Since it’s magic realism, I so had to get it.

Second part of the book flea market haul – I know, I know, I have more than enough horse novels already. But I’m a collector, or at least that’s how my brain functions. Meaning I just can’t walk away when I’m confronted with cheap horse novels. I shouldn’t even attend second hand booksales, it’s always disasterious. I just can’t help myself:

  1. Susan und ihr Traumpferd by Wendy Douthwaite
    [OT: A Very Special Pony]

    Because … I didn’t have it yet?

  2. Der Mondreiter by Angela Waidmann
    [LT: The Moon Rider]

Err … ehm … no idea?

  3. Blindes Vertrauen by Margot Berger
    [LT: Implicit Trust]

Oh, oh, there’s a reason behind this one! Not only did I love her Reiterhof Birkenhain [Birch Grove Stables] series, I also wanted to get these books for ages! They are base don true stories and I always love when horse novels are somewhat realistic (at least I hope it will be realistic).

  4. Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke
[dt. Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell]

I almost picked this one up a couple of times in the past. When I saw this beautiful three book edition, which also seems to be brand new, I couldn’t resist.

  5. Roter Blitz by Astrid Frank
    [LT: Red Lightning]

It’s about the racehorse Phar Lap. I love horse racing, although I’ve never actually been to a race. It’s just a very fascinating sport with incredible athletes (Zenyatta ♥). I read Frank’s novel on the history of the Arabian horse a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it so I’m looking forward to reading this one.

Amazon purchases:

  1. The Demon King (Seven Realms, #1) by Cinda Williams Chima
[dt. Der Dämonenkönig (Seven Realms, #1)]
  2. The Exiled Queen (Seven Realms, #2) by Cinda Williams Chima
[dt. Das Exil der Königin (Seven Realms, #2)]
  3. The Gray Wolf Trone (Seven Realms, #3) by Cinda Williams Chima
[dt. Der Wolfsthron (Seven Realms, #3)]
  4. The Crimson Crown (Seven Realms, #4) by Cinda Williams Chima

They are so so so pretty! When Crini marathoned and loved the series, I just wanted to have them, too.

  5. Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan
[dt. Die sonderbare Buchhandlung des Mr. Penumbra]

Basically everyone I know who’s read this novel really liked it and that made me buy it as well – that and the fact that it glows in the dark!

  6. Tell the Wolves I’m Home by Carol Rifka Brunt

This novel appears to be everywhere and although I didn’t intend to purchase it, it was impossible to get away with it. So I crumbled under the peer pressure, but I am looking forward to reading it. Since everyone seems to love it, it must be really good.

The Book Depository purchases:

  1. Daughter of the Flames (Ruan, #1) by Zoe Marriott
  2. FrostFire (Ruan, #2) by Zoe Marriott
    [dt. Frostblüte]

Ever since I first saw the German edition of FrostFire at the Frankfurt Bookfair, I really wanted to get these novels. I’d probably have bought the German edition (very pretty cover) if I hadn’t found out that it was a companion novel. Since the first one hasn’t been published in German, I decided to go for the English editions.

  3. Magic Study (Study Series, #2) by Maria V. Snyder
[dt. Yelena und der Mörder von Sitia (Yelena, #2)]
  4. Fire Study (Study Series, #3) by Maria V. Snyder
[dt. Yelena und die verlorenen Seelen (Yelena, #3)]

I’m a little surprised that it took me so long to get these two novels. I read and loved Poison Study last summer and wanted to continue reading as soon as possible. Now I’ll have to reread the first one because I’ve forgotten all about it.

  5. The Winner’s Curse (Winner’s Trilogy, #1) by Marie Rutkoski

I’ve been waiting so long for this novel, but now that it’s here, I’m a little wary. In the past few weeks, I’ve read a couple of mixed reviews and now I’m afraid I won’t like it.

  6. The Nightmare Dilemma (Arkwell Academy, #2) by Mindee Arnett

I really enjoyed the first one which was such a quick and easy guilty pleasure read. I really hope this will be as much fun as the first one.

Thalia.de purchases:

  1. Little White Lies by Katie Dale

I totally fell in love with the cover but it also sounds pretty interesting.

  2. Half Bad (Half Life, #1) by Sally Green
[dt. Das Dunkle in mir (Half Bad, #1)]

It’s all Crini’s fault! She’s always making novels I haven’t on my radar tempting for me.

  3. The Thousand-Dollar Tan Line (Veronica Mars, #1) by Rob Thomas & Jennifer Graham

It took only four episodes of Veronica Mars and I was totally hooked and a Marshmallow through and through. I wasn’t even finished watching the show when I preordered this one.

  4. Phantasmen by Kai Meyer
    [LT: Phantasms]

    Kai Meyer. ’nuff said!

  5. The Unbound (The Archived, #2) by Victoria Schwab

I haven’t even read The Archived yet but everyone was buying the second book so I decided to jump on the bandwagon so that everyone actually reading the series can get a third book. Not that I won’t read them. I just haven’t had the time yet. Too many books et al.

reBuy.de haul part 1:

  1. Julia reitet durch den Sommer (Julia, #4) by Harriet Buchheit
[LT: Julia Rides Through the Summer]

Two more books to go and I have finally collected the whole series! It’s incredibly hard to get these books. They are really rare.

  2. Der Hengst der Blauen Insel by Walter Farley
[OT: The Island Stallion (The Island Stallion, #1)]
  3. Die Rache des roten Hengstes by Walter Farley
[OT: The Island Stallion’s Fury (The Island Stallion, #2)]

These two are spin-offs/part of the Black Stallion series, which is a total mess in German. Some novels were never published and others in a wrong order. It’s really annoying and difficult. I’m so going to write a post about this series when I’ll have them all.

  4. East by Edith Pattou

It’s a retelling of the Norwegian folk tale East of the Sun and West of the Moon. Isn’t that an awesome title?! Up until Miss Bookiverse shelved the book on goodreads, I’d never heard of either the tale or the novel. When I saw it up on reBuy for next to nothing I thought I’d give it a go.

  5. Die Muschelmagier (Wellenläufer-Trilogie, #2) by Kai Meyer
[ET: The Shell Magicians (The Wave Runners, #2) / Pirate Emperor (The Wave Walkers, #2)]

I’m a little sad that it isn’t in pristine condition. Of course it is always risky to buy second hand and sometimes the books are as good as new and sometimes you don’t even want to touch them because they are horribly stained. This one is acutally in a decent shape, otherwise I would have sent it back.

reBuy.de haul part 2:

  1. Schweigenetz by Kai Meyer
    [LT: Web of Silence]

    Self-explanatory.

  2. Catching Jordan (Hundred Oaks, #1) by Miranda Kenneally
    [dt. Frostblüte]

Just a little bit of contemporary fiction to broaden my horizon.

  3. Heaven: Stadt der Feen by Christoph Marzi
    [ET: Heaven]

I love Marzi’s Uralte Metropole [Ancient Metropolis] series and wanted to read this for ever.

  4. Der Kuss des Dämon (Dawn & Julien, #1) by Lynn Raven
[LT: The Demon’s Kiss (Dawn & Julien, #1)]
  5. Das Herz des Dämons (Dawn & Julien, #2) by Lynn Raven
[LT: The Demon’s Heart (Dawn & Julien, #2)]

I really enjoyed Raven’s newer works (although I still haven’t read her latest novel), but I also want to read some of her older stuff.

  6. Wainwood House: Rachels Geheimnis by Sarah Stoffers
    [LT: Wainwood House: Rachel’s Secret]

I saw this one for the first time at the Frankfurt Bookfair and really wanted to get it. Unfortunately, German hardcovers are always quite expensive. I was so lucky to get this one for half the price – and it looks as good as new.

N-2014_03I

reBuy.de haul part 3:

  1. Das Gelübde by Kai Meyer
    [LT: The Vow]

    Self-explanatory.

  2. Die Karte der Welt by Royce Buckingham
[OT: ? / LT: The Map of the World]

This one is pretty interesting: it’s a translation from English but there’s no English edition of this novel. Again, I first learned about it at the Frankfurt Bookfair and couldn’t resist to get this one.

  3. Der Schattenesser by Kai Meyer
    [LT: The Shadow Eater]

    Self-explanatory.

  4. Das Haus des Daedalus by Kai Meyer
    [LT: The House of Daedalus]

    Self-explanatory.

  5. Die Geisterseher (Gebrüder Grimm, #1) by Kai Meyer
[LT: The Ghost Seers (Brothers Grimm, #1)]

Self-explanatory – and with that haul, I now own 48 of his 54 books. Only 6 more to go! And then I’ll go for the comics and audio dramas and whatnot.

  6. Tiger’s Quest (Tiger Saga, #2) by Colleen Houck
[dt. Pfad des Tigers (Eine unsterbliche Liebe, #2)]

Although I really enjoyed the first two thirds of Tiger’s Curse, I didn’t particularly like it. So why did I get the sequel? Well, because I loved the setting so much, don’t like to leave a series unfinished (e.g. I haven’t completely given up on it yet) and it cost only 99ct! That’s next to nothing and the book looks unread. What a bargain!

  7. Reiterträume by Harriet Buchheit
    [LT: Rider Dreams]

An omnibus edition of two of her novels. I love Harriet Buchheit’s stories and therefore I’m collecting her novels. She has written a lot.

  8. Debt of Bones (The Sword of Truth, #0) by Terry Goodkind
[dt. Das Verhängnis der Schuld (Das Schwert der Wahrheit, #0)]

It’s the prequel to the Sword of Truth series – of which I own three quarters but haven’t read a single one yet. But the series is very dear to me since there are a couple of memories that feature the TV show and the first novel (which I did start once but never finished it because I lost track).

  • The 4th picture is my favorite! Love all the books on that one! 😀

TBR Pile +43 XD Should be put on a book buying ban for the rest of the year! 😛

    • I cannot wait to start the Seven Realms series! It’s all your fault I got it 😀 !

Shhhhhhh! I know, I know! I just have no discipline at all so that won’t work 😛 . Btw, I totally forgot to enter it into the challenge table … I’m so sorry!

So hübsch!
