Hilarious Horse Novel Titles #0: Introduction

29th March 2015

HHNTThe first book I remember reading myself and actually enjoying was a horse novel I got for Christmas when I was 8 years old. Up until then, I had loved books and other people reading them to me, but I had hated reading myself. After said book, I couldn’t stop anymore. In recent years, my horse novel addiction had gone unnoticed. The only people who knew about it were a couple of Internet friends I haven’t been much in touch with and like-minded people on the PonyClub book club board. I was content and left in blissful peace. Then, I started to make new friends on Goodreads, which was also just fine – until I went on Twitter. Gone were the peaceful days in my horse novel paradise, replaced by constant mobbing and my silent tears …

Okay, I’m totally kidding! If you are 24 and still collecting and reading horse novels, there’s no way you’re that sensitive. I encountered offensive comments in the past, but I don’t really care anymore. That’s my quirk. Call me crazy but deal with it. Fortunately, all I get nowadays is some friendly teasing that most of the times makes me laugh so hard I start crying, the rest makes me fall off my chair laughing. Seriously, I just love my Twitter people! And it’s totally their fault I’m starting this feature.

If you’ve been reading horse novels for about 16 years, you are utterly and totally desensitised. Granted, the older you get, the more you realise that they are often silly and totally unrealistic, but you’ve grown so used to one oddity you don’t even see any fault in it: the titles. However, for everyone else, horse novel titles are batshit crazy – and very easily misinterpreted. The first time I came upon this rift was when Sebastian pointed out to me that Besser reiten [Better riding] could also be the name of something completely different. I was flabbergasted. I’ve never even thought about interpreting horse novel titles. This feature is his request and I really hope you’re all going to have lots of fun. I’m pretty sure, I will.

I’ve got about 900 horse novels. I was about to write that the majority has titles that are straight forward, but you know what: I don’t even know that! Maybe most of them are totally crazy. I haven’t checked yet. I plan on writing (at least) a post each month that will present the crème de la crème of horse novel title crazyness. Some posts might have a certain topic, some be a random collection, others might follow series. I don’t even know how exactly I’ll structure these posts. It’s not easy to break out of this desensitsed brain of mine but I’ll try my best to entertain. The first topic will be up on April 1st so everyone has something to laugh about.
