Introductions III: Of Languages, Diced Cheese, and Blog Adventures

11th April 2013

Introductions3

Part 3 in the Blogger-Initiation-Trilogy. In part 1, you learn what’s behind the word readingrat and in part 2 you find info about myself.

Of Languages

By now, I’m pretty sure you’ve noticed that I have bilingual posts. I have no idea whether I will keep it that way. For now, it’s more or less a test drive, but I’d really like to know what you think about it. Which language do you prefer? English? German? Or would you read both? Any suggestions?

Regardless, I strongly suggest that you stick to the English version if that’s possible since that is the language in which I write my posts (for now). If that changes or if German is the more convenient language for a certain topic, I’ll let you know.

In case you’re wondering, I write in English for two reasons: first, the only book site I’m using at the moment is goodreads.com, which is an international site where the language of conduct is English. Additionally, I have a few non-German speaking friends who might like to stop by from time to time. Second, it’s the major part of my bachelor degree so this is a great practice. At the moment, I’m so attuned to English that I have difficulties to form coherent German sentences. This is really really awkward, but I hope to get back into the writing flow soon. So why even bother to translate it back into German? Well, as you will notice pretty soon, I’m a sucker for horse novels. I think it’s safe to say that most of you aren’t interested in reading my reviews on this topic, which is totally fine. However, those who might be interested are probably younger and therefore not as fluent in English as the rest of you.

Lost in Translation

In case you’re checking out both languages, you’ll realise that the English and German texts are NOT identical twins. As I’ve already mentioned, I translate the English text back into German. In the process, I tend to change words and sentence structures or even add or delete short parts until the text is to my liking. However, these changes are small, or else I will point it out; the content and tone will remain the same. Just keep that in mind in case you’d like to use this blog as your translation practice (and if you think that’s unlikely: that’s more or less how I started to use English outside of school – by translating a fan page of my favourite book series into German). Furthermore, English is my second language so I’m far from perfect and am going to make at least some if not tons of mistakes. If you catch anything, please let me know, I’m eager to improve.

Comment Languages

Feel free to comment in English or German or both. You could also try French (there’s a decent chance that I’ll understand at least the context), Spanish (if you’re lucky, I’ll catch one or two words), or Gaeilge (only if you want to talk about the weather or your university subjects). If you care to be understood and want a reply, stick to the first two.

Of Reviews and Diced Cheese

So I don’t need to say much about my review style for most of the books out there. In case I include spoilers, there will be spoiler tags. However, I’m not yet sure about the horse novel reviews. Since most of them are short, they might turn out as recaps and could become ironic up to sarcastic. There’s no way in denying that there are a lot of lousy and cheesy ones out there. So be warned, they might be very spoilery.

Ratings

It’s of the utmost importance to understand that I rate all books according to how much I liked them. I don’t rate genres/categories against each other. Instead, I take them separately and compare the books among their kind. Therefore, both a horse book and some major classic can have five stars/dices of cheese. Otherwise, I would have to mark down the former considerably and I don’t like the idea.

So my rating system equals the star rating system on Goodreads, but since I’m a readingrat, I use dices of cheese.

Kw5
Books I could not put down. They are not necessarily flawless, but the overall impression makes it easy to turn a blind eye.
Kw4
Books
I love but don’t have that certain something or have some flaws that couldn’t be overlooked.
Kw3
Books I like but are more or less average or have some major flaws.
Kw2
Books I’m more or less indifferent to. They are ok but nothing more.
Kw1
Books I absolutely hated.

Of Blog Adventures and What to Expect

Seriously, I don’t know. I have a million ideas but right now, I’m not sure if or how I will implement them. This is a book blog so you can expect the standard posts (reviews, new books, reading lists, wrap ups, …) but I’m also going to include posts about related areas, such as adaptations or other bookish things that come my way. Perhaps I’m going to include some of my writing now and then, perhaps I will write posts about something completely different. Sometime in between, I also want to get my layout nice and pretty. At the moment, we are having quite a row, because it just doesn’t want to let me customise it the way I want (btw, if anyone could explain to me how to add the subscription/notification option to comments, I’d be overjoyed). But right now, I’m just really glad that I’m finally off on this adventure. It’s four months later than I planned but as soon as I will have pressed the publish button on these introductory posts, I don’t have much choice but to continue on this journey. I would be really happy if you join me for part of the way.

→Introductions 2: About the Readingrat

Lost in Translation

Kw1

Okay, let’s switch to English. I don’t mind if you continue writing your blog entrys in English. As I rarely have the possibility to use English at the moment it will be a good practice for me, too. I tend to forget everything and mix it up with Spanish. So… make me read your posts 😉

As a vegan I have to criticise the cheese… couldn’t you have chosen leaves or apples? I think rats eat everything.. 😛
But nice idea changing the stars into something more creative.

Which books will you review first? Will you take tips or read books which a recommended to you by your readers? Will you review “only” fiction or “critical” literature, too?

Well, I’m looking forward to being a “follower” of your blog 😉

    Hugs, Emily

    • Noooo way! Of all people in this world, why does it have to be you?! I thought you’ve finally forgotten that I exist.
Well, sure you want to read everything in English. You’d run screaming if I started using Gaeilge.
And of course you have to be difficult as always, having millions of special wishes. But I’m going to stick to the cheese – no one said you have to eat it 😛 !
So why don’t you get the heck out of here instead of ruining my craic!

      Regards, Síne

Hello my dearest Piper! It must have been ages since I last used this name. We’re getting old, aren’t we?
So first off, I’m quite surprised that I actually understood the whole Spanish part (not every word, but I get what you’ve said)!
Believe me, I’m so going to make you read my blog. I’m going to nag you as long as it takes. And of course I chose cheese because it was the first thing that came to my mind. I hope you can forgive me that I didn’t think about the feelings of certain groups 😉 !
I’ve already written the English parts for Imaginary Girls and The Host, then I have a couple of horse novels waiting, but I’m mostly looking forward to my Lycana review, which will be more or less told in pictures since I’ve been to all the places except for Aughnanure and Aillwee (perhaps I’ll do Nosferas, too, but I didn’t take any notes). And then … we’ll see. Of course you can give me tips, I just can’t promise that I’ll read it. I’m going to review almost entirely fiction because I’m not reading much critical stuff (btw, what did you have in mind?).

Love, Cara Meluiwen (I just had to)

    Alohaa,
just wanted to say hello and tell you that I already adore this blog! Still, you might have to remind me from time to time to drop by and write something, because I tend to be somehow forgetful (why the hell did I have to look up this word?… speaking bout forgetful…)

Guess it’s pretty obvious that I’m going to read this blog in english (I love your english, just saying. why isn’t mine that good? It should be..), just because it’s english. And i love english. Just saying.

aaand I couldn’t help but laughing at the comment from so-called Piper and your reply. Now I feel old, too. You know, I’m turning 18 in 22 days. That’s horrible. (I know you’re older, but still.)

Well anyway, I’m going to continue with stalking Kili (or Thorin, don’t know what happened to me but I’ve started to prefer Thorin. wth. I’m weird. You know, I’m writing this while lying on Kili. On my Kili-blanket, I mean)

Yeah, however, nice to read this loooooong introduction 🙂

Looking forward to read something else.

    Love <3

Silvi (who loves Kili AND Thorin. weirdo.)

    • Awww, you’re so sweet! Don’t worry, I’ll be nagging you all the time.
Well, it doesn’t depend on the age but on the time that went by. And that was quite a lot of time in retrospect.
But … but … how can you do that to poor Kíli?! You’re so cheating on him 😛 !
And I know what you’re looking forward to … and I haven’t even started it yet. But I will read it in April. And you better hope I’m going to like it. Oh well, at least you know that I already have a high opinion of Akkarin … great. Now I’m a giggling mess. THANKS, Silvi!

      • silvi_loves_kili

        Perfect 😉
Don’t mention it. Please. Six years.More than six freakin years!!
        oops.. 😀
        You know – it’s already April 😉
        hehe, can’t wait, darling 😉
And you’re more than welcome – anytime!

  • Followup comments notifyer, yay! 😀
