Newbies May 2015

29th June 2015

Newbies_2015_05Umm … I think this got kind of out of hand. Well, compared to last year’s hauls, this is barely average, but I was doing so well. And then there came May, my good intentions vanished into thin air and I got more books than in the previous two months combined. In my defense … well, what can I say. It’s just the way I am – AND I had a lot of preorders AND I had to get the last PennyGirl books because the publisher was selling out AND I had a friend over who I just had to introduce to my favourite book shop in Munich.

  1. Süße Cupcakes selber backen by Nancy Lambert
[OT: Make, Bake and Decorate Cupcakes]
  2. Spaß mit deinem Pferd (Pferdewissen, #4) by Ardina Strüwer
[LT: Fun with Your Horse (Horse Facts, #4)]
  3. Sofie und Alvar (Abenteuer auf dem Ponyhof, #2) by Ina Bruhn
[LT: Sofie and Alvar (Adventures at the Pony Farm, #2)]

And now my watch has ended. There won’t be any more PonyClub/Pony/PennyGirl books I can collect – at least not in the forseeable future. It’s the end of an era and it makes me so so sad, especially since the club will continue in the Scandinavian countries (maybe I really should learn Swedish). The worst thing about it: the publisher really made a mess with my order, sending requests for payment to my mum although she had nothing to do with it and it was already paid. They wrote a couple of outrageous emails, but fortunately, the whole thing just petered out because they hadn’t any legal claims after all. I looked them up and apparently that’s kind of their thing, so keep far away from them. It’s very sad that it had come to such an end.

  4. Ascheherz by Nina Blazon
    [LT: Ash Heart]

This one comes from a book swap with Kücki. So glad I got the hardcover. So far, I’ve read only two novels by Nina Blazon, one I really loved and one I didn’t like. Hopefully, this one will belong to the former category. I have a couple of friends who always recommend her books.

  5. The Return of Sherlock Holmes (Sherlock Holmes, #6) by Arthur Conan Doyle
[dt. Die Rückkehr des Sherlock Holmes]
  6. His Last Bow (Sherlock Holmes, #8) by Arthur Conan Doyle
    [dt. Seine Abschiedsvorstellung]

One day, I’ll buy the Sherlock Holmes novels in these fancy paperback editions. For now, I’ll keep collecting them as free ebooks. Not quite sure but I think now I have them all in digital form.

  7. Nachtlilien (Nachtlilien, #1) by Siri Lindberg
[LT: Night Lillies (Night Lillies, #1)]

I bought this book for exactly two reasons: 1st, it was really cheap; 2nd, it’s dedicated to one of my best friends, who was one of the beta readers. I even held the manuscript once because it was send to my place, since she was staying with me before she went on holidays.

  8. Die unendliche Liste by Umberto Eco
    [ET: The Infinity of Lists]

This book was recommended to me because I love lists so much.

  9. The Fill-In Boyfriend by Kasie West

Although I didn’t like the Pivot Point duology that much, Kasie West is on my auto buy list, because I loved The Distance Between Us so much. I really hope I’ll enjoy this one as well. These books are just great when I need contemporary fluff.

  10. A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR, #1) by Sarah J. Maas

I had to buy it because it’s Beauty and the Beast and faeries! Already read it, really enjoyed it, but I have some issues.

  11. The Wrath & the Dawn (The Wrath & the Dawn, #1) by Renée Ahdieh

This was one of my most anticipated books of 2015 and fortunately, I loved it to pieces. Wonderful, magical, enchanting, heartbreaking. Perfect.

  12. Die Stunde des Fuchses  (Der Clan der Seeker, #1) by Arwen Elys Dayton
    [OT: Seeker (Seeker, #1)]

This is the last of the books I preordered when working for the publishing company. Since then, I’ve heard a lot of negative things about this novel but maybe I’ll be the odd one out yet again.

  13. The Game of Love and Death by Martha Brockenbrough

I’m not quite sure why I preordered it. It’s not necessarily my kind of novel, but the premise sounds great and if I remember correctly, it is endorsed by two authors I really like.

  14. The Inheritance Trilogy (The Inheritance Trilogy, #1-3.5) by N.K. Jemisin
    [dt. Das Erbe der Götter]

Had this one on my wishlist for quite some time and I was in a bookbuying mood so … yeah. It’s huge!

  15. The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories by H.P. Lovecraft

This is from my favourite (well, maybe not anymore. I went there last Friday with a friend and the seller was so unfriendly and rude that we just left without getting the books we’d already picked out. A classic case of how to scare away your customers.) book shop in Munich. I held it in my hands a couple of times before but never picked it up because I still thought it too expensive. This time around, I just bought it. I just love the cover!

  16. Slammed (Slammed, #1) by Colleen Hoover

I also got it at said shop. I haven’t read a book by Colleen Hoover so far and since this one is everywhere, I decided to give it a go. In fact, I think I’ve never read contemporary NA before.

  17. Lyra (Fabula, #2) by Christoph Marzi

I didn’t like Fabula as much as I love his Uralte Metropole [LT: Ancient Metropolis] series but since I don’t like to leave series unfinished and this one was on sale, I had to get it.

  • Aaah, Kasie West!

  • BUT YOU WERE DOING SO WELL.

Good to know, though, that there’s a bind-up of the Inheritance trilogy! The first book’s on my tbr but it’s somewhere in Germany and sometimes I’m really in the mood to finally read it and well … just tried to remember since when I actually own that book and it must be, oh I don’t know, 2011? It’s about time, innit.

    • I … I … *goes into hiding*. But hey, I made up for it in June. Like, really made up for it (although I could actually have reduced my TBR by now, if May hadn’t gone crazy. Oh, well, I’m on the right track).

Yes, I’m also really glad, especially since the novella’s part of it, too. Oh come on, 2011? Are you kidding me? That’s, like, really sweet. I’ve got about 160(+) books on my TBR that are older than 2011 😀 !

      • As long as you’re happy with your books, all is fine. 😀

You have to see it from my perspective! 2010 is the year I got a tbr pile in the first place, so relatively speaking, 2011 is waaaaaaaaaay back when. For me, anyway. 😉
