New Year’s Reading Resolutions

02nd January 2014

NYRR2014

Wait, is it 2014 already?!

First, I wanted to let you know that I’m currently writing my bachelor thesis which I have to hand in in February. This means that I won’t have much time for blogging. Still, I’ll try to give you a couple of posts although I don’t really see it happen right now. I’m sorry, but I will be back soon.

And in case you’re wondering, I’m still counting books. I just have too many. Nevertheless, I’ve got most of them by now so expect an update to the book census in the next couple of days.

New Year’s Resolutions

Goodreads Reading Challenge

GR2014In 2013, I wanted to read 12 books a month. Turns out I aimed much (much much) too high. Instead of 144, I managed only 92, one more than in 2012. Therefore, I pledge 100 books this year. It’s probably way to optimistic again since I have no idea what’s up next for me when finishing my bachelor degree. Still, there has to be a little challenge and 8 or 9 books a month should be manageable.

SuB-Abbau extrem [TBR-Pile-Reduction extreme]

SubAbbau2014Oh yes, I’m doing it again although I failed so very epically in 2013 by increasing my TBR pile by 108 books instead of reducing it by 24 as I planned to do. Still, it’s just too much fun not to participate! I pledge to reduce my TBR pile by 2 books a month and since my ginormeous pile is slowly but steadily getting to me, I’m actually planning on scaling down my hauls considerably. We’ll see how long I’m going to stick to this resolution …

Kommentar-Challenge [Comment-Challenge]

Kommentar-ChallengeA couple of my twitter/blogger girls, namely Bou, Crini, Rishu and Ric, decided to make up a little challenge after Bou complained about current commenting habits. Basically, we don’t do it often enough and there are too little fruitful discussions in the comment sections of our blogs. And how are we going to change that? By commenting the hell out of us on other blogs to get some routine, incite said discussions and hopefully establish more close ties with our blogger colleagues.

The New Reading Lists

In order to fulfil the first two challenges, I decided to create a new system for my reading lists. In the first half of 2013, my old lists worked pretty well for me but then I got lax and everything went a little crazy so I didn’t even bother to write posts about them. I really want to change things to how they were so here is my new system:

  1. 1 book for the Lieblingsbücher-Challenge [Favourites-Challenge]

The challenge runs until September and until then, this reread of one of my favourite books will be part of the list.

  2. 2 series sequels

I’m currently stuck in 81 series. 21 of them are on hold, which means that I don’t own the following sequel yet. Of the rest, I haven’t picked up the next instalment in 30 of the series in the last four years, while I’m more or less reading the other 30 series parallel. Sounds complicated, is complicated and since one cannot actively read 30 series parallel, I haven’t picked up the next book in quite a number of these series in the last year or two … or three. I planned to reduce the number of series I’m currently reading in 2013 but instead, I started 23 but finished only 6. Although 2 sequels is only a drop in the ocean, it’s better than nothing and I really have to keep going at them, especially since my goal is to finish 15 series this year.

  3. 1 book from my random reading list

I love playing with the random button on my calculator and used it to select 12 novels from my GR TBR shelf, which I probably wouldn’t read otherwise in 2014. It’s a colourful mixture of books that have been on my TBR pile for ages and others that I got just a couple of months ago.

  4. 2 books from my 2013 purchases

So many books I buy end up as TBR pile corpses – unread, unloved, and forgotten. I got 184 books in 2013 of which 146 ended on my TBR pile. That’s really bad. In order to prevent them from becoming lost souls of my TBR pile, I randomly selected 24 novels to choose two each month. Again, it’s next to nothing but at least I’m going to try.

  5. 2 or 3 books I just want to read

In order to reach my goal of reading 100 books this year, I have to read 8 books a month and an additional book in 4 of the 12 months. Since my list consists of 6 books already, the other 2 or 3 will be completely up to myself. Since I tend to read so many unplanned novels anyway, this gives me the opportunity to continue doing so without clashing with my reading list which happened so often in the second half of 2013.

  • That sounds like a tight time schedule. Best of luck! And one day your tbr pile won’t be as high and you can pick up whatever book you want. 😀
I’m trying to read all the new books I get this year (tried that 2013 as well and … failed, of course) and otherwise stand-alones and sequels of series I already started that are on my tbr pile. There might be one or another series I will start this year, but hopefully not as many as in 2013 (23 new series).

    • Thank you! It is and I’m slowly starting to panic. It should be alright but at the moment, I’m terribly lazy which doesn’t help.

Not so sure about that 😉 ! As Ric never fails to remind me, my TBR pile will sustain me for about ten years at my current reading speed – and just think about all the books I will get in the next ten years 😉 … But reading every book one gets sounds like a good idea. In case I will actually stick to my sort of book-buying ban, maybe I could incorporate this as well. And I already know that I will be starting way too many series again. There are just a couple of really cool books coming out this year and of course most of them are the first in a series …

      • No need to panic, nothing bad will happen if you don’t reach ALL of your aims. 😀 Well, we might tease you a little bit because we’re nasty little buggers, but apart from that …

Better ten years than forever. 😀 Or you get drunk and give some of them away to charity or something. xD It would only be nine years after that!
It would definitely keep some book from becoming one more … Subleiche. (Is there an equivalent in English?)
But Cara! There are so many great series that are continued! Concentrate in them! Do it! (We could look for a toy or something that says “no” whenever you pick up a first, hm …)

      • And that’s why I love you all so much! No matter how much you’re teasing, it always makes me laugh.

Well, if you wanna wait for me to get drunk, you’ll be waiting forever. Still, it’s very unlikely that I sort out unread novels, at least at the moment. One never knows what is to come.

I started to call them TBR pile corpses. I don’t know whether there is another proper term but I just had to use something.

Well yes, I know, but … oh, it’s sooo hard! And you should definitely work with Ric. She wants to invent something that’s going to smack my fingers whenever I’m about to click the order button.

      • <3

I won't wait, I'll stage the whole thing. Which might be difficult as I'm a teetotaler myself, but I'll find a way. I always do. *smiles evilly*

Tbr pile corpses then. If I don't forget about it again, I should really ask someone about it. xD

That would be a neat thing; if we ever manage to get something like that, I want one, too. xD (So, where could you possibly find evil geniuses to build all the stuff we'll come up with?)

      • Yeah, just keep telling that to yourself! Still, now my mental cinema is running wild with the two of us getting drunk on cognac-coloured tea and water substituting vodka.

Well, I know where we would find evil geniuses. But first, we need one to find a way how we can acutally get into the novel.

      • I don’t need to tell that myself, life proved it! (It totally didn’t, actually, but reality’s subjective, so who cares.)
That’s sounds really nice tbh. xD

We could talk to Cornelia Funke about that, couldn’t we? Getting the evil geniuses out would actually be better.

      • All it takes is the right attitude and a little imagination to form the world to our liking.

Depending on whether we want them to walk around doing their evil geniuses’ stuff after helping us …

(What are we actually talking about?! This so doesn’t sound like a comment on a book blog xD ! We’re always getting carried away … too much imagination for our own good ;P )

  • Wow, found someone who is reading more series than I XD (I have to finsih 71, but I don’t know how many of those are already finished) Still don’t know why people always complain about books being part of a series… I love that 😀
Picking books that are sequels for monthly TBRs shouldn’t be too hard. Most on my TBR are in that category anyway XD

    • I didn’t know I was stuck in so many series until I started to count them for this post. It’s a little crazy 😉 . And as much as I obviously love series, I also like standalones very much. Therefore, I hate finding out afterwards that the assumed standalone was actually the first in a new series. I want to know that before reading so that I can wrap my mind around it. Oh, and I also hate when (more or less) completed standalones (or even series) are turned into (longer running) series or get companion novels. Why can’t a standalone stay a standalone (and a finished series a finished series)?
That’s the thing when reading so many series xD . The only problem is that there are so many possibilities to choose from.
