It’s Period Drama Season!

 PDS - Period Drama Season

Over the summer, many of my favourite fellow readingrats have mentioned that they have seasonal reading preferences. In most cases, summer seemed to be reserved for contemporary fiction while fantasy literature was banished from all reading lists. Apparently, summer’s way too hot to read those tomes. Well, to a certain degree I get the point: just holding up one of those heavy giants makes one break out in sweat. Besides that, I had a good laugh whenever I came across this kind of reasoning. Seasonal reading preferences? No way, not with me …

… or at least that’s what I had been thinking until a couple of weeks ago when the temperature suddenly dropped by 10 degrees. I was freezing in my room since the heating didn’t work; apparently it wasn’t yet cold enough. All I could do to stop my teeth from chattering was putting on my favourite winter socks and snuggling down in bed with a hottie (not the living type, unfortunately). Unsuspecting, I had been about to decide what to read when this particular quirk of mine sat up in its bed tucked away in a snug corner of my mind, cheerfully declaring that it was done with aestivation since it was autumn now. And autumn, it crowed, is the time for period dramas! And I’m obliged to remind you that you’re a sucker for period dramas, black tea imported from Ireland or Great Britain, and autumn storms.

Oh well, what can I say, it’s the truth. I do love costume dramas for all those social conventions, romantic tales and beautiful gowns. Ah, a girl likes to dream! However, my favourite era is the early 19th century or to express it in writers: Austen, the Brontë sisters, Dickens, Gaskell, Doyle, and so many, many more which I’m bound to discover. I already have numerous period dramas, even some duplicates, that is, different adaptations of a novel. I have to admit that I’ve neither watched nor read much of the material I have, mostly because I would like to read the novels first but so far couldn’t get myself to do so.

So, I didn’t quite lie when I said that I wouldn’t have seasonal reading preferences. There’s not much to read with period dramas, subtitles and cover jackets aside. However, the little quirk also told me that now would be the perfect time to read the classics behind the adaptations and I realised that I’m always more inclined to reading classics in the autumn and winter. They always take time and dedication, and I really have to be in the mood or else I cannot concentrate. Sooo, I think that’s actually a seasonal reading preference for you. In my defence, I was totally unaware of this situation until the little quirk decided to make itself known.

At the moment, I really want to read the classics and have already started with my enormous The Complete Novels of Jane Austen. So this little project of reading, watching and reviewing classics and their (period drama) adaptations came to my mind. It’s a little crazy since it is quite a time-consuming idea and I’m about to start my Bachelor thesis, so I’ve no idea how many reviews I’ll be able to deliver. Still, it’s something different and perfect for this season. Maybe I’ll be able to get some of you interested in if not reading then at least watching some of these good old classics. I’d be delighted if you’d embark on this interesting journey through 19th century literature with me. Feel free to laugh about my hopelessly romantic fangirling, but there’s just no better season for swooning over Mr Darcy. It’s just something about this atmosphere – the early darkness, the earthy and smoky air, the freezing cold, and the pouring rain – that heightens my romantic streak.

So gehts mir zumindest oft.
